Alberto Contador not to take part in Beijing

The Chinese fans will be thoroughly disappointed to know that Alberto Contador is not taking part in the Tour de Beijing. The Spaniard who returned to cycling after surviving a two year doping ban doesn’t want to participate in an event which is “pointless”. According to the rules of UCI Contador’s World Tour points won’t count as he is returning from a doping ban.

Contador won the Grand Tour Championship for five times and the Chinese fans were super excited to see him around. He also won the Vuelta a Espana this year just after returning from the ban. It has been stated earlier that Alberto Contador would participate in Beijing from October 9-13. But recently Bjarne Riis, the manager of Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank Team said that he wouldn’t be a part of it. He added that it would be wastage of energy for Contador to travel to Beijing and taking part in the race as he won’t be getting any World Points in the elite category even if he secures the first spot.

Surely Contador’s presence would have made the Tour of Beijing much more interesting and popular but one can’t argue with the points that have been given in favor of his withdrawal. Contador was the man who scored most of the points last year for his team to survive the World Tour. So his team will certainly be missing him this time.

Alberto Contador’s centre of attention now is the World Championship which will take place in Netherlands in the latter half of September. He will be making his first appearance in the World Championship since 2008 and he is keen on winning it. There he will compete in the road race category as well as in the individual time trial category. If Contador can make it in the championship then it will be a huge confidence booster for him after the ‘ban-setback’.
